New fleets of electric golf carts will be delivered to Rec Park 18 and El Dorado Park Golf Courses between June 3rd and 11th.  There will be slightly improved GPS systems on these carts.

Thanks for your understanding during the transition process from the old fleet to the new fleet, as this will address several concerns about carts with dying batteries as we head into the summer months.

New Reservation Site and more aerification info

April 6th, 2010 by Bob

After arduous testing, American Golf will finally roll out a new reservation website on April 7th.  They have done everything their webmasters can think of to make sure  the site will work properly regardless of your personal web browser, but as with anything new, our customers are encouraged to try to familiarize themselves with this site before the first time they try to get a reservation.  If you have problems, you may want to try to clear your temporary internet files.  To visit the new site, go to the following site:   http://lbcgolf.com/teetimes.cfm.   There is information on how to use the new site in the grey box titled “LBC – Online Reservation Center”.

Because of expected cold nights (and thus a potentially slower healing process), the greens aerification at El Dorado was delayed and will now take place April 27th.  Heartwell will be aerified on April 20th, and the second half of the process at Big Rec and Skylinks will take place in a few weeks.

Storm Drain Project Update at Little Rec

March 17th, 2010 by Bob

Work on the storm drain project that will have some impacts to Recreation Park South GC are beginning to really move forward.

Pipes will begin being laid along 6th street in approximately 500′ increments, and this is tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, March 22.  Throughout this phase of the project (between 1-2 weeks) 6th Street will be reduced to one-way traffic, with flagmen directing traffic.  For 1-2 days during this span, golfers going from #5 to #6 and from #9 to the parking lot will have to traverse steel plates covering the drain project, and there will be 1 or 2 days where water to the on-course restroom at the 6th tee will be shut off for a few hours.

Updated information about this project can be found at the City of Long Beach website by cutting and pasting the following address:

Greens Aerification coming in March

March 3rd, 2010 by Bob

Greens aerification — a necessary maintenance practice where compacted soil is removed from greens and replaced with sand to allow better air circulation among roots and the loosening of soil which allows roots to grow and expand — will begin on the Long Beach courses in March.

Approximately 2 years ago the City and American Golf agreed to do what is called “half-and-half” aerifying, where greens that are large enough to have one half of the green aerified while the other half is untouched, will again be implemented at Big Rec and Skylinks.  This process takes a little more work on the part of the maintenance crews, but affords golfers a smooth putting surface in the location of the hole.   El Dorado, Little Rec and Heartwell will do full aerification.

Check the particular course you prefer to play, but the tentative schedule for aerification (could change as a result of rain) is as follows:

Rec Park 9:  March 8

Skylinks:  March 22 (first half) and April 6 (second half)

Rec Park 18:  March 8 (first half) and April 5 (second half)

El Dorado:  March 29

Heartwell:  April 5

Storm Drain Project begins at Rec 9 GC

February 22nd, 2010 by Bob

On February 22nd, temproary fencing was installed on the 6th hole at Little Rec as part of the Storm Drain Improvement Project going on in that neighborhood.

For the next several months a catch basin (designed to prevent debris from entering the Colorado Lagoon) will be installed in the Northwest corner of the course.  There will be an underground filter to catch and prevent debris from entering the Lagoon, and this filter will be cleaned out on a regular basis.

In approximately April, a new back-flow drain will be installed in place of the one currently next to the forward tee on #7, and for approximately one week, the back tee on hole #7 will be closed while that is replaced.

Welcome

February 22nd, 2010 by Bob

Welcome to “Par for the Course”, a Web Log related to the City of Long Beach’s five municipal golf courses.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine created the City of Long Beach Golf website as a way to use today’s technology to keep our citizens and customers informed about what is going on in the City of Long Beach’s Golf Operation.

Along with major stories of interest like updates on our Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame, recognition of Rec Park’s 100th Anniversary, happenings in the phenomenal Long Beach Junior Golf Association and descriptions of our facilities, we have a “contact us” section where people can submit electronic comments and questions about the courses, City rules and regulations or recommendations on ways in which we can make your golf experiences better.

This BLOG is another tool whereby the Golf Operation can quickly update or discuss items related to the city’s golf operation. I encourage you take advantage of this website, and offer any comments on improvements to it.

As always, you may contact me, or the General Manager at one of the courses if you have concerns or questions about one of the courses.

Keep it in the short grass,

Bob Livingstone
Superintendent of Golf Operations
